It was founded in 1667 around the Church of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, when it became independent of Angra dos Reis.
Due to its sugar cane mills the city was very important and famous, and then in the XVIII century its port became important as it was where the gold from Minas Gerais was shipped to Portugal. However it resulted in an economic isolation when the route of gold was abandoned because of the pirate assaults who took refuge in near beaches as Trinidade.
Finally, in the 1970s, thanks to the new roads that were opened and the good state of preservation of its old housing and curches, Paraty became an atraction for tourism.
